ENO's Vision and Mission

Our Vision

Opera without limits

Our Mission

Creating extraordinary encounters with opera, on stage and beyond

In the words or our founder Lilian Baylis, we are the opera company for everyone. .

There are no limits to where you might find our work – physically (on stage or in new and found spaces), virtually (digital and broadcast) or geographically (locally, nationally or internationally). No limits to how we make and create opera – blurring boundaries between disciplines, genres and form. No limits to who gets to make, shape or participate in opera.

Sharing exceptional operatic experiences, showcasing the very best of British talent.

We believe that singing in English enhances the emotional connection between performers and audiences.

Shaping the future of the art form, workforce and sector, through pioneering approaches to learning, training and creating with our communities and partners

The ENO has long had an enterprising spirit. We have a strong track record in adapting to change and overcoming adversity – and this is matched by a boldness of spirit and an appetite to take risks and continually forge new ground.

Developing new ways to flourish in a changing world, through technology, innovation and enterprise

We will use the scale of opera and its unique
combination of music, visual arts, movement, literature, crafts, technology and drama to create work that invites us to explore the big questions in life – in a way that only opera can. There are no limits to the possibilities of our storytelling.

Building new and lasting relationships with audiences, participants and partners, locally, nationally and internationally.

Where possible, we want to invite audiences, partners and
participants to create with us. We can all be creative (whether professionals or non-professionals), and we want to actively challenge assumptions around who gets to make and create art.
