We are very sad to hear that designer Paul Gareth Brown has died.

Paul was a hugely influential figure in stage design whose work in opera and theatre combined ceaseless innovation with heart-stopping beauty. His talent was matched by an equally exceptional gift for friendship, and he was a most generous mentor to colleagues across the industry.  Paul faced cancer with great courage and died peacefully on 13 November at home in Wales, with his partner, Andy by his side.  He will be remembered with delight by a generation of opera and theatre-goers and with love by his many, many friends.

Paul regularly collaborated with both Graham Vick and Jonathan Kent and designed the sets for some of our most striking and beautiful productions. His most recent ENO production was Jonathan Kent’s The Flying Dutchman in 2012 and before then he had worked on A Child of our Time, also with Jonathan, and Fidelio with Graham Vick.

Paul had been working with ENO and Cal McCrystal on our forthcoming performances of Iolanthe and we are honoured to have the opportunity to realise his wonderful designs for this production next year.
