Paul Brown was born in Glamorgan, South Wales, and trained under Margaret Harris. He worked prolifically in opera and theatre. He died in 2017, aged 57.

UK credits include: Lulu, Pelléas et Mélisande, The Turn of the Screw, The Fairy Queen, Don Giovanni, Hippolyte et Aricie (Glyndebourne); Manon Lescaut, Tosca, Mitridate, re di Ponto, Falstaff (ROH); The Flying Dutchman (ENO).

 

European credits include: Idomeneo (Göteborgsoperan, Sweden); The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny (Royal Danish Theatre); Le Roi d’Arthus (Opéra National de Paris); Guillaume Tell (Rossini Opera Festival, Pesaro); Tristan und Isolde (Deutsche Oper Berlin); War and Peace, Elektra, Die Frau ohne Schatten (Mariinsky Theatre).

 

US credits include: Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, Moses und Aron (Metropolitan Opera, New York); Kát’a Kabanová, Adès’s The Tempest (Santa Fe).

 

Theatre credits include: Coriolanus, Richard II, King Lear, The Tempest, Platonov (Almeida).

Other designs include: Man of La Mancha (Broadway); The Phantom of the Opera (US and UK tour); Half a Sixpence (Chichester Festival Theatre, West End), and Philip Haas’s films Up at the Villa and Angels and Insects, for which he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Costume Design. He died in November 2017.
