David Butt Philip

David Butt Philip was born and brought up in Wells, Somerset, and began his musical training as a chorister at Peterborough Cathedral. He studied at the RNCM, RAM and the National Opera Studio and was also a Samling Scholar in 2009.

Recent roles include: title role Der Zwerg (Deutsche Oper Berlin); Froh Das Rheingold (Teatro Real); Grigory Boris Godunov (ROH); title role Hamlet (Oper Köln); Earl of Essex Gloriana (Teatro Real); title role Hamlet (Glyndebourne on Tour); Laertes Hamlet (Glyndebourne); Narraboth Salome; Folco Isabeau (OHP); Laca Jenufa, Luigi Il tabarro (Opera North). Awards include the John Cameron Prize for Lieder, the Richard Lewis/Jean Shanks Award, the Edwin Samuel Dove Prize for special merit, the Bruce Millar/Gulliver Prize and the prestigious John Christie Award in 2011.
