Nicholas was born in St Austell, Cornwall in 1966 and at a very young age took up playing a brass instrument.

He played euphonium with the St Austell Band making several solo radio broadcasts on both local and national radio until gaining a scholarship to the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 1985 to study the tuba.
