Lighting Technician (Fixed Term Contract)

The Role

The Lighting Technician will be part of ENO’s lighting team that provides a supporting & creative service for all of ENO productions and for visiting companies both at the London Coliseum and at designated alternative venues. S/he will be expected to work to the highest technical standards, be considerate and professional in dealings with colleagues and to have an understanding of both the artistic aspirations and requirements of a production.

The Lighting Technician will be scheduled to carry out any task within the capability and skill of the individual and to work in any area or venue as required.

The work is based on an average 43-hour week with annualised hours. Full details are provided in the ENO/Bectu Terms and Conditions document.

The daily line management will come from the Lighting Managers and Senior Lx Technicians. The exception is when working at the Lighting Workshops when management will come from the Lighting Resource Coordinator or the Assistant LRC.

The Lighting Technician should have a practised ability in the core skills relevant to the post as well as an understanding of all related aspects of stagecraft. S/he will combine a high quality technical ability, a positive and professional attitude and a ‘hands on’ approach to the job.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • To receive instruction from the Lighting Managers (or Senior Lx Technicians) on a day to day basis and carry out those tasks reliably and efficiently and safely.
  • To be aware of the technical requirements of specific productions in order to support the efficient running of performances
  • To safely operate the department’s equipment to a high standard; plotting and running shows and rehearsals
  • To take responsibility for maintaining their skills base at a high level and to inform the Lighting Managers (or HoD) if they require additional training or refreshers.
  • Generating and up-dating plots, set up notes and cue sheets to provide accurate and accessible records of shows and their running requirements
  • Communicating at the appropriate level within the Lighting department and across the Technical Department to facilitate the Rep and to maintain the highest standards of operation
  • Ensuring that all activities are carried out in accordance with the Company’s Health and Safety Policy and establish that other technicians as appropriate are aware of these requirements
  • Actively participating in risk assessments and reporting accidents, incidents, near misses and hazardous situations
  • Maintaining a high degree of housekeeping and storage of equipment to facilitate the efficient running of the repertory season.
  • Understanding and collaborating with other departments especially Stage, Production, Sound and Stage Management to fulfil the requirements of each production and the repertory season as a whole.

Person Specification includes:

Essential

  • Ability to focus a variety of lanterns quickly and accurately under instruction.
  • To be familiar with current lighting equipment and associated accessories
  • To rig equipment in accordance with H&S regulations.
  • To accurately read and understand a lighting plan and extract relevant information from it.
  • To be able to make running plots or F/Spot plots during the on-stage rehearsals.
  • A working knowledge of automated fixtures.
  • An understanding of Ethernet/DMX networks. To be able to address equipment requiring data addresses.
  • A good knowledge of all relevant Regulations appropriate to the post.
  • Ability to carry out fault finding, running repairs and maintenance.
  • A basic knowledge of electricity and electrical safety.
  • Able to follow spot.
  • Confident to work safely at height (training will be given if required).
  • A broad understanding of the workings & requirements of other technical depts.

Desirable

  • A working knowledge of ETC desks, basic electronics, Vector Works would be an advantage but not a necessity
