Alison Chitty

Designer

Alison Chitty trained at St Martin’s and Central schools of Art. She has designed for Riverside Studios, Royal Shakespeare Company and the West End.

She was Resident Designer at the National Theatre for eight years, and won a British Drama Award for Venice Preserv’d and Olivier Awards for Best Costume Design for both Remembrance of Things Past and The Voysey Inheritance.

Designs for ENO include Khovanshchina (Olivier Award Best Production), and for the ROH Billy Budd (Olivier Award Best Production), Birtwistle’s The Minotaur, and Parsifal. She has also worked internationally, including in Chicago, Berlin, Paris, Munich and at La Scala, Milan.

Recent productions include a Ring cycle at Gothenburg Opera with Stephen Langridge. She has worked frequently with Mike Leigh – plays: Ecstasy (Hampstead Theatre), It’s a Great Big Shame! (Stratford East), Two Thousand Years and Grief (RNT); films: Life is Sweet, A Sense of History, Naked and Secrets & Lies. She was Director of the Motley Theatre Design School (1992–2003). She was awarded an OBE in 2004, received the Young Vic Award in 2008 and was made a Royal Designer for Industry in 2009.
