Barbora Horáková

Director

Barbora Horáková was born in Prague and studied as a singer at the conservatoires in Basle and Geneva. As a member of the Swiss International Studio she was awarded several competition prizes before deciding to switch to opera directing, studying at the Bayerische Theaterakademie. Her close collaboration with director Calixto Bieito began with Parra’s and Klaus’s opera Wilde (Schwetzingen Festival) and she subsequently collaborated on a series of major Bieito productions, which she transferred from Munich, Oslo, Basle, ENO and Zurich to Nuremberg, Venice, Bilbao, Leipzig and Madrid, including From the House of the Dead, War Requiem, Tannhäuser and Die Soldaten.

Career Highlights

Directing credits include: La voix humaine (Neuchâtel); L’enfant et les sortilèges (Basel); Pelléas et Mélisande (Oslo, Basel); L’Orfeo, Dido and Aeneas, El Amor Brujo (Bilbao); Un giorno di regno (Heidenheim Festival); Respighi’s La bella dormente nel bosco (Lyon); a double bill of L’enfant et les sortilèges and Offenbach’s Olympia (Vienna’s Kammeroper); Luisa Miller Wuppertal). She was a finalist and prizewinner at the Ring Award Graz in 2017, and she was Newcomer of the Year at the 2018 International Opera Awards. She is ‘Haus’ director at the Staatsoper, Hannover.
