Charles Edwards was born in Newcastle upon Tyne and studied design in London. He is both a director and a designer.

Notable design engagements elsewhere: Little Greats Season (Opera North); Falstaff (Vienna Staatsoper, Beijing) Kiss Me, Kate (Châtelet, Paris, Oper Graz); Verdi Triple Bill (Hamburg); Adriana Lecouvreur (ROH, Paris Bastille, Vienna, Barcelona); Faust (ROH, Monte Carlo, Lille, Trieste, Valencia, Australia); Il trovatore (Chicago, San Francisco, Metropolitan Opera); Werther (ROH, Paris Bastille); and several for other major British opera houses. European work includes operas in Berlin, Stuttgart, Darmstadt, Mannheim, Karlsruhe, Paris, Bordeaux, Strasbourg, Metz, Barcelona, Lisbon, Göteborg, Copenhagen, Liège and Graz – and also in Israel. In North America his designs have been seen in Houston, Dallas, Long Beach and Chicago; and for Opera Australia in Sydney.
