Nicholas adapted Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials for the National, where his versions of John Gabriel Borkman and Three Sisters were also produced. Other versions include Naked and Lulu for the Almeida and Thérèse Raquin for Chichester Festival Theatre.

His adaptation of Pumla Gobodo-Madikizelas’s A Human Being Died That Night was produced at Hampstead Theatre in 2013 and his adaptation of Pat Barker’s Regeneration was produced in Northampton and on tour in 2014.  

Other opera libretti are The Little Prince (composer Rachel Portman, for Houston Grand Opera) and Man on the Moon (Jonathan Dove) for Channel 4. Books are 99 Plays, a survey of drama from Aeschylus until the present day, and Changing Stages, co-written with Richard Eyre.
