Sarah Tipple is a freelance director, and has worked in theatre, opera, and musical theatre.

Career Highlights

Notable engagements elsewhere: directing the West End, UK tour and South African productions of Dirty Dancing; revival director for Mike Leigh’s ENO production of The Pirates of Penzance in Saarbrücken, Luxembourg and Caen in Autumn 2015 and at ENO in 2017, and she has revived Anthony Minghella’s production of Madam Butterfly on four occasions, including at the Perth International Arts Festival, Australia, and most recently at the London Coliseum in 2016. As one of the founders of Barbershopera productions she has directed all their shows to date, which include Barbershopera; Toni & The Guys (Plymouth Drum, UK Tour, BBC Radio 4), Barbershopera: The Barber of Shavingham (Trafalgar Studios, Plymouth Drum, BBC Radio 4), Barbershopera: Apocalypse No! (Trafalgar Studios, UK tour) and Barbershopera: The Three Musketeers (Pleasance 2, Plymouth Drum).

Other directing credits include: The Marriage of Figaro (OperaUpClose at Kings Head Theatre, London, and touring); The Snow Queen (Nuffield Theatre, Southampton); French Without Tears, The Winter’s Tale, Punk Rock, You Can Still Make a Killing (Arts Educational, London); Annie Get Your Gun, Bay (Claire Studio, Young Vic); Mad Funny Just, winner of the Old Vic New Voices award (Theatre503); Mayfly (Old Vic New Voices 24 Hour Plays); The Wrong Man (Pleasance Theatre and tour). As staff director: Julietta, Elegy for Young Lovers, Turandot, Partenope, Don Giovanni (ENO). She also works as a dramaturg, most recently on Joe Wright’s production of Life of Galileo (Young Vic).
