Timothy Nelson
Baritone
Timothy Nelson gained a degree in Physiology from Cardiff University before studying with Peter Savidge at the Royal College of Music International Opera School, where he was awarded the McCulloch Prize for Opera. He was a Jerwood Young Artist at the Glyndebourne; winner of the Bruce Millar Gulliver Prize, the RCM Joan Chissell Schumann Competition and the Gerald Moore Award Singers. He was also a recipient of an Independent Opera at Sadler’s Wells Postgraduate Voice Fellowship.
Career Highlights
Among his recent highlights are baritone soloist Mini Vixen (Opera North); a tour of Gilbert and Sullivan concerts (Tarantara!); Bach Christmas Oratorio (Polyphony/Britten Sinfonia); Bach St Matthew Passion (London Handel Festival); and Elviro Serse (Figure Ensemble/OHP).
In the 23/24 he covered Strephon Iolanthe (English National Opera).
His operatic roles include Marcello La bohème, Lieutenant Gordon Silent Night (Opera North); Nathan in the world premiere of Pleasure (Opera North/Aldeburgh/ROH); Sid Albert Herring (The Grange Festival); Anténor Dardanus (English Touring Opera); and Mustafa L’italiana in Algeri, Falke Die Fledermaus, Escamillo Carmen (Diva Opera).
Roles at the RCM International Opera School include Figaro Le nozze di Figaro, Papageno Die Zauberflöte, Ramiro L’heure espagnole, Don Pomponio Rossini’s La gazzetta; and multiple roles at the London Handel Festival.
He has also covered Ramiro L’heure espagnole, Malatesta Don Pasquale (Glyndebourne); Zurga The Pearl Fishers; Belcore L’elisir d’amore, Dandini La Cenerentola (Opera North); Angel It’s a Wonderful Life; Demetrius A Midsummer Night’s Dream (English National Opera); and Solanio The Merchant of Venice (Welsh National Opera).
In concert Timothy has performed Karl Jenkins The Armed Man (Royal Albert Hall); Handel Messiah (London Handel Festival, Royal Festival Hall); Rossini Petite messe solennelle (Three Choirs Festival); Haydn Creation (City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, English Haydn Festival); Bach St. John Passion (Cadogan Hall); and the world premiere of Some Call it Home (Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra).
Away from singing, Timothy is an avid rugby and cricket fan and a keen golfer. He can often be found on the golf course trying to lower his handicap.
