Issue 12: A chat with... Marita

25th November 2024

In each issue of our newsletters we have interviewed a different member of the team to find out a little bit more about them outside of ENO Breathe.

This time round we will be hearing from a newer member of the team – Marita Anastasi. Marita joined our team at ENO earlier this year.

What is your earliest memory?
Taking my first swim at the beach!

Have you always wanted to work in the Arts?
Not when I was little – initially I wanted to become a vet, and then an archaeologist (with a specific goal of discovering Great Alexander’s tomb). In fact I went to University to study History but ended up training in dance professionally, so working in the Arts industry became more of a goal for me in my late teens/early 20s.

What was your first job?
I was a waitress at a very cute coffee shop in my hometown, in Cyprus. There were a lot of stray cats wandering around the neighbourhood who would pay us occasional visits. At some point our coffee shop was feeding as many as 12 cats, which was both crazy but also incredibly cute!

Do you have a favourite opera/show?
Too many to choose from! But, as a dancer, the Nutcracker has a special place in my heart. My very first visit to London with my mom was to watch the Nutcracker at the Royal Opera House and to this day it’s one of the best trips I have ever taken.

What is your favourite song?
Playground Love by Air, which is the soundtrack of one of my favourite movies called “Virgin Suicides” by Sophia Coppola.

Do you have any hobbies?
During the lockdown I picked up embroidery. I’m still trying to finish my first project, but better late than never!

What can’t you live without?
Yoghurt!

What do you wish you had learned sooner?
That something doesn’t have to be “perfect” to have value.

What is your favourite part of your job?
Calling the London Coliseum my office, and sneaking into the auditorium to watch rehearsals! But this on par with all the wonderful people from all walks of life that we get to meet and work with.
